finger and saying, quote, bang, die." strangers stopped to support him and shout down the woman. he says police have identified a suspect, but no arrests have been made. if prosecuted, the woman could be charged with a misdemeanor. happening right now in oakland. police have barricaded a murder suspect inside after a home and are trying some aggressive tactics to get him to surrender. you see some video from the scene. this is happening at the intersection of 21st and chestnut streets. a s.w.a.t. team is on location as well as a hostage negotiator and a k-9 unit. police have used rounds of beanbag and tear gas. it's believed the suspect is inside alone at this moment. traffic is being directed and diverted around the scene. we'll bring you the very latest as we get into it our newsroom. now to decision 2012. just 22 days away, new polling data suggests that president obama is holding a slim lead nationally while mitt romney has pulled ahead in some key

battleground states, including florida. but those numbers could change, especially after tomorrow night's second presidential debate. there is a lot at stake here. here is nbc's steve handelsman from washington. >> hello, everybody, hello, hello! >> reporter: president obama, whose last public break from debate camp was jed yed is being warned insiders say not to overcorrect and be too aggressive tomorrow night. at the town hall-style debate at hofstra university on long island -- >> yes, he needs to show he is tougher, yes, he needs to attack, but he doesn't want to come across as a bully. for mitt romney, the number one piece of advice that he is getting is to engage with these questioners. in town halls he has a tendency when he gets a tough question to back away. >> debate number one erased the president's lead in virginia and reduced it in other swing states. the race is tied nationally in two new polls. but mitt romney's likability has shot up after the denver debates. and romney's not mentioned in

the new obama ad. >> stick with this guy. he will move us forward. >> reporter: the new romney poll ryan ad replayed the vp debate. >> did they come in a tough situation? absolutely. but we're going in the wrong direction. make sure we work on making phone calls and getting people to the polls. >> reporter: the same message later in ohio. >> we even need you to talk to your relatives to get them out. that's so important. >> reporter: another state, georgia, began early voting today. first lady michelle obama cast her ballot. i'm steve handelsman, nbc news, washington. after three days of maneuvering through los angeles streets, the space shuttle "endeavour" finally made it to its final stop. the california science center. and it got there on the back of a bay area company. nbc bay area's jodi hernandez got an inside look. she is live in alameda with more tonight. jodi?

>> reporter: the trailers used are electronically controlled and capable of carrying some 600 tons. the folks here at alameda are experts in executing huge moves. but moving a space shuttle is a new endeavor. >> it can crab diagonally this way, and it can also carousel, which would be spinning 360 degrees. >> reporter: you're looking at a replica of the computer-controlled trailers that took the space shuttle "endeavour" on its final mission, a move that was engineered and carried out by a bay area-based company called sarens. >> it was a huge honor to play any kind of a role in this project. i've never seen so many happy faces on the streets of los angeles. >> reporter: charlie wells was a left-wing spotter on the 12-mile city street trek. as a colleague maneuvered the shuttle using a remote control, wells helped make sure nothing touched the $1.8 billion

shuttle, despite some tight spaces. >> no leaves, no branches, no light poles, obviously. but the tiles on the shuttle are very fragile. and it was stated from the beginning that absolutely nothing could touch the shuttle for the whole route. >> reporter: but sarens is no stranger to monumental jobs. the lifting and rigging company has transported bridges, nuclear reactors, and refinery equipment. they played a crucial role in repairing the earthquake-damaged bay bridge in 1989. but moving a shuttle is a mission not quite like the rest. >> we've muched, much heavier, much bigger objects, but this is certainly the most important. we're not used to moving big, heavy objects in such a public setting with so many people as obstructions. >> reporter: now that "endeavour" has made it safely to its new home, the months of preparation have paid off. the folks at sarens couldn't be prouder. >> we just wanted to take our

time. i mean, time wasn't really that important, because it was a very important piece of equipment that we were moving through. >> reporter: months and months of preparation went into planning this massive move. some 40 people from sarens took part in the operation, staffing two shifts around the clock. when they reached their final destination, there were a lot of high-fives, i'm told, and now the team is catching up on some much needed rest. reporting live in alameda, i'm jodi hernandez, nbc bay area news. >> what a great move. thank you, jodi. well, basketball on the waterfront. the warriors are giving the public its first look at designs for a proposed san francisco arena. if approved, that arena would be built right here on a 13-acre site at piers 30 and 32, just south of the bay bridge. here are some drawings now. they were revealed today. it shows the arena is pushed back from the embarcadero to maintain views of the bay and the bay bridge.

the site will also include seven acres of public space and raised terraces that will cover more than 600 parking spaces. the team says it's working to address neighbors' concerns about traffic and blocked views. >> i think a lot of people who have been concerned that we were going to build disneyland on piers 30-32 will be quite surprised. >> the team plans to present the new designs to community groups during a meeting tomorrow night. the project faces numerous potential hurdles from the city and that state. the city of oakland today passed a milestone no city wants the see. police are investigating its 100th homicide of the year. about 1:00 this morning, a man was shot and killed near hilton and market streets. he later died at a hospital. police and crimestoppers are offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. last year, oakland recorded 110 homicides. well, still to come here at 5:00, an eye-opening new report about smuggling cell phones into prisons. >> it just keeps spreading.

[ applause ] plenty of cheers for alvin roth, the visiting professor, but soon to be a permanent and full-time professor at stanford. got a standing ovation from his students today. he called it the icing on the nobel cake. his morning class turned into a news conference of sorts. but dr. roth never stopped teaching, explaining to reporters that economists don't just work with money. he is being honored in part for designing a formula to facilitate kidney donations. >> so if you're incompatible, you can't give a kidney to the patient you love, but you're healthy enough to give a kidney, you could give a kidney to someone else as a patient, and your patient could get a kidney from their donor. and that's an exchange. so exchange is what economists are good at. so the question is how to organize exchange. >> all smiles. professor roth shares the prize with an 89-year-old ucla professor who is amused to have won the nobel prize for economics because he has never taken a formal economics class

in his life. there is new information about a controversial vaccine given to young girls. we're talking about the hpv vaccine. they found girls who got the shot were no more likely than other girls to get pregnant, get other stds or ask a doctor for birth control. researchers at kaiser permanente looked at 1400 girls. hpv is the main cause of cervical cancer and genital warts. it is recommended for boys and girls as young as 11. fda inspectors found salmonella in raw peanuts at the company's processing plant in new mexico. we're talking about the sunland incorporated company, which made peanut butter sold at various stores including locally trader joe's. and it's linked to 35 salmonella cases across 19 states. everything made in the sunland plant since march of 2010 is now being recalled. the 14-year-old pakistani girl shot by the taliban is recovering at a hospital in

england tonight. the teenager shot last week by the taliban for advocating education for women has been flown to the uk to receive specialist care. nbc has this report from outside the hospital. >> reporter: good day to you. mall la la yousufzai is being examined by medics. she arrived here at 12 hours in the air. and a very slow road journey. paramedics taking it very easy because of the nature of her injuries. a hospital spokesperson saying that they do believe that she has a really good chance of a full recovery, but managing expectations too and saying that it will take some time, weeks, probably months for the full recovery. >> we offered last week, last thursday our help to the government of pakistan in caring for her because she does need particular specialist care. >> reporter: this is a hospital with a lot of experience dealing

with gunshot wounds and serious head injuries. in particular, dealing with military personnel seriously injured in afghanistan who are flown back here. so a lot of experience dealing with the kinds of injuries that malala has. they have everything from neurosurgery to plastic surgery. all the same, surgeons will be very cautious and careful in monitoring her condition before making their first steps to help her on that road to recovery. nbc news, birmingham. in other news tonight, he traveled faster than the blue angels did during fleet week, faster than the speed of sound, and today he is talking about it. 43-year-old austrian skydiver felix baumgartner high above the desert yesterday afternoon. a helium balloon carried his capsule 24 miles to the edge of the atmosphere, and then he jumped, breaking the previous free fall record from 1960. he reached a top speed of 834 miles per hour.

the jump had many risks besides going splat. if his pressurized suit would have torn, the atmospheric pressure could have caused his blood to boil. the extreme spinning could have caused eye or brain damage. so why do it? >> let me tell you, when i was standing there on top of the world, you become so humble, you do not think about breaking records anymore. you do not think about gaining scientific data. the only thing you want is you want to come back alive. >> baumgartner broke more than just the speed of sound. he also broke youtube records, with more than 8 million viewers watching it live. >> can you imagine? unbelievable. >> amazing jump. okay. the weather cleared up today? at first i was like ooh, the fog, it's lingering. it turned out to be beautiful. >> not too bad if you're diagnose a little skydiving around the bay area. we know the opportunities are around. probably wouldn't want to be doing any of that up into the northwest. look at, this getting slammed with a second system over the past three days. a lot of rainfall here for washington and also oregon.

we're going to detail our chances of getting any of this coming up. meanwhile, today it's all about those temperatures warming on up. i know you probably noticed something in the air out there. some of the warmest air back into livermore. 83 in gilroy. mid 70s in sunnyvale and holding on strong to 70 in san mateo. 70s on the peninsula at this hour. definitely a sign of some changes. it's not orly hot back in the east bay, but in about two days, temperatures are going to be a lot different. let's get a look right fwhoychlt have these developing dry winds primarily out of the north, it is that northerly wind that eventually will do this to our temperatures. look at this. livermore, from 60s last week to potential low 90s over the next 72 hours. and south san jose from 60s last week to also low 90s. and then san francisco at the coastline could go from 50s to low to mid-80s as we head throughout the next three days. let's take you outside of the live hd sky camera network. another sign of the warming, no fog at all right now. we have mid and high level cloud cover that is great news at at&t

park for the giants. we're going to have a fantastic forecast as we continue throughout that game. okay. let's get you back into the next 48 hours. the storm door is wide open. well show you the showers across washington and oregon. that's going to continue here as we head throughout the next two days. but just like the system last week, we're on the tail-end of this. so as it gets closer, it's going to break apart. it's just going to be all about high pressure, at least over the next two or three days to get us not only warm, but even a little hot for this time of the year. what we're going to see happen is the winds shift more to the north. also slightly offshore. it will get breezy to gusty for tuesday and wednesday. that fire danger really starting to increase by wednesday as some of our interior temperatures could reach the low 90s. the rainfall off to the north, that looks like it's going to be gradually starting to diminish. then as we ehead throughout 5:00 a.m. for tomorrow, looks like a dry forecast. some of that fog will be right up against the coastline. we think by the noon hour, we're expecting widespread sunshine from the north to the south bay. tuesday daytime highs topping out a little warmer. 83 in san jose. also 83 in palo alto.

for the east bay, 81 in the castro valley. oh, yes, close to the 90s in east bay. 87 in walnut creek. 87 in livermore. and 86 in pleasanton. san francisco even anticipating mid-70s with those dry northerly winds and 77 in oakland. on your three-day forecast, we'll go with low 90s by thursday. not going to continue too much longer as we head throughout saturday and sunday. numbers will start to drop, and we'll get some cooling in here. no showers for the upcoming weekend. but definitely some weather that we'll be used to for this time of the year. grab some short, get the flip-flops. you'll need it the next couple of days. >> looks nice. >> in october? >> i know this. is wild. >> thanks. with jeff we talk a lot about doppler radar. it helps us forecast the weather. now get ready for doppler dentist dentistry. it sounds interesting, marianne. >> it is. this non-invasive technology uses no radiation, and it can actually give you the chance to prevent a cavity and avoid needing a filling. >> going to put your glasses on

for me. >> reporter: kristen is a busy nursing student who admits she hasn't been to the dentist in a while. she wants to see how her teeth are doing, and this technology is enabling her to do that without an x-ray. at innovative dental concepts in san ramon, the doctor is using spectrum technology to get this sophisticated image of her tooth. >> there is no radiation being used in an image like this. >> the blue indicates a high level of bacteria, and red means the bacteria is already beginning to penetrate the tooth em enamel. we can talk about different techniques. >> because these pictures capture decay early, even if patients require a filling, they often only need a tiny one, which may not even require anesthesia. these pictures also motive patients to improve their habits because they can clearly see the problem zones in their mouths.

charles manson was caught with a phone in his prison cell, t3 a year and a half since charles manson was caught with a phone in his prison cell, the problem of inmates getting phones continues. now a new report traces phone smuggling and other issues to prison workers. the corrections department says one female prison worker was accused of bearing an inmate's child. she quit rather than undergo a dna test. other examples include workers or guards sending nude photos or love letters on phones they have smuggled to inmates. the primary reason, though, is cash in all this. inmates have paid up to a thousand dollars for phones. 20 state prison workers have been fired in recent months, and nearly two dozen more are under investigation. prosecutors say inmates use the phones not just to talk with family, but also to run street bengs and ocuanize other criminal activity. we should find out tomorrow whether the 49ers are on the short list to host the super bowl in gh,16 or gh,1 at the team's new stadium in santa clara. call it team worac, even thods by then the team will be playing in south bay, san francisco could end up winning as well, playing the role of host city. mayor ed lee has been working
